1. Understand the size parameters of U-locks
Before choosing a U-lock, you need to focus on the following size parameters:
Total length of the lock body: determines whether the U-lock can wrap around the bicycle frame and fixed objects (such as railings and parking posts).
Opening width (lock arm spacing): affects whether it can pass through the wheel, frame triangle or thick tire.
Lock rod diameter: The thicker the lock rod (such as 14mm or more), the stronger the hydraulic shear resistance, but the weight will also increase.
2. Choose a U-lock according to the type of bicycle
Small bicycles (folding bicycles, baby bicycles)
Recommended U-lock type: mini U-lock.
Reason: Lightweight and easy to carry, small opening width, can lock the frame and rear wheel.
Standard bicycles (road bicycles, commuter bicycles)
Recommended U-lock type: medium-sized U-lock.
Operation tips: Pass the U-lock through the front wheel + frame triangle + fixed objects to maximize the anti-theft effect.
Large bicycles (mountain bicycles, cargo bicycles)
Recommended U-lock type: extended U-lock.
Note: A lock that is too long may reduce portability and needs to be fixed with an anti-sway strap.
3. Measure the "key locking point" of the bicycle
Frame triangle circumference:
Use a tape measure to measure the circumference of the triangle area surrounded by the down tube, seat tube and seat tube of the frame to ensure that the U-lock can cover the area.
Compatibility of wheels and fixed objects:
If you need to lock the wheel + frame, measure the tire width and choose a U-lock with a larger opening width.
Fixed object size:
The diameter of common parking columns is about 10-15cm, so you need to reserve extra space when choosing a U-lock.
